Why do we need a comprehensive sex education?

Let's look at some statistics from the United States, every year:
  • Three million teenagers contract an STD
  • Nearly one million teenagers become pregnant
  • One fourth of those, end in abortion
It is obvious that these are high numbers, but are these normal?
No, they are not. Let's see how we compare to some European countries.

According to Advocates For Youth, The United States has:
  • Seven times the teen pregnancy rate of the Netherlands
  • Seventy-four times the teen gonorrhea rate of France.
  • Eight times the teen abortion rate of Germany.
So what makes the United States so different?
In these countries, they embrace a comprehensive sex education.

  1. I find it interesting that the parents and politicians spend all of this time debating on what should be taught, when the ultimate decision of whether or not to engage in sexual activity is made by the students. I support a comprehensive curriculum so that at least if the students decide to experiment or become sexually active, they know the risks and preventive measures available to prevent the spread of disease and prevent an unwanted pregnancy. Why would a parent not want their child to be well-informed? Sex education was not taught in schools when I was young, and my parents never discussed sex with me. Everything I learned was heard through other students mouths. Most of it untrue. Abstainance is the only 100% solution, but that cannot be achieved, so lets teach the kids the dangers of unprotected sex. LD

  3. Are The Netherlands, France, and Germany next leading in pregnancy, gonorrhea, and abortion? Or are they least in those catergories? Or is there nothing special in particular?

  4. That is a very good question.
I am not sure if they are leading or behind in those categories. I have tried to find out, but it is difficult to find teen statistics for other countries, I will continue looking.

However, I do know that these countries were picked because they can be easily compared to United State's culture. For example, these countries have similar age of first sexual intercourse, which is 17.
